Board of Regents Elects New Chair and Vice Chair
RENO – The Nevada Board of Regents today elected Bret Whipple to serve as chair and Dorothy Gallagher as vice chair of the 13-member higher education governing body.
Regents Whipple and Gallagher will begin their one-year terms starting July 1. The Board's current chair, Dr. Stavros Anthony, and vice chair, Dr. Jill Derby, will conclude their terms June 30.
Whipple was elected to the Board of Regents in 2002 and is the representative for Clark County, District 2. He currently chairs the Board's Investment Committee, in addition to serving as a member of the Budget and Finance Committee and the ad hoc Board Development Committee.
A practicing attorney in the state of Nevada, with license to practice in Arizona, Regent Whipple’s primary area of concentration is criminal defense. His experience in the field of law is wide-ranging. It includes numerous jury trials, preliminary hearings and an “oral argument” before the Nevada Supreme Court.
Regent Gallagher is a fourth generation Nevadan and has served as a regent for 22 years for District 8. After retiring in 2002, Mrs. Gallagher returned to the Board in 2004 to serve her fifth term when her appointed predecessor chose not to run in the 2004 election. She has previously served one term as chair and two terms as vice chair.
Regent Gallagher earned a B.A. in zoology from the University of Nevada, Reno.
The Nevada Board of Regents is the elected, 13-member governing body for the Nevada System of Higher Education. Comprising two doctoral-granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research institute, the NSHE serves the educational and job training needs of the nation’s fastest growing state. As Nevada’s only system of higher education, the NSHE provides educational opportunities to more than 100,000 students.
