07-18-1942 Volume 5 - Pages 349-350 REGENTS MEETING July 18, 1942 Meeting called to order at 10:00 A.M. by Chairman Ross. Present: Ross, Brown, Olmsted, Wardin, Gorman and Hartman. Dr. Hartman presented a thank-you letter from Dean S. Palmer. Mrs. Wardin moved approval of the minutes of the May 9 Regents meeting and the Executive Committee meeting of June 15, 1942. Dr. Olmsted Aye Mrs. Wardin Aye Judge Brown Aye Mr. Ross Aye Bids for oil were opened as follows: Los Santa Freight Total Angeles Barbara Refiners Co-Operative Assn., Inc. .97 .87 .32 1.19 Tarr & Mc Comb Oil Co., Ltd. .82 .32 1.14 Associated Oil Co. .90 .27 1.17 Union Oil Co. .90 .27 1.17 Dr. Olmsted moved that the contract be given to the Union Oil Company for approximately 5000 barrels of fuel oil, specification #400, for the period from August 1, 1942 to June 30, 1943. Dr. Olmsted Aye Mrs. Wardin Aye Judge Brown Aye Mr. Ross Aye Dr. Hartman discussed a leave of absence for Dr. Inwood from August 31, 1942 to July 1, 1943 to go into government service, which he had granted. Dr. Hartman presented for confirmation the appointment of Mr. Brainerd Plehn to succeed Arthur Kaufman as Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at a salary of $2400 a year, payable in 12 monthly installments, effective September 1, 1942, for the year 1942-43. Dr. Olmsted moved that this appoint- ment be approved. Dr. Olmsted Aye Mrs. Wardin Aye Judge Brown Aye Mr. Ross Aye Dr. Hartman presented Miss Shila Wiley's letter of resignation as a Fellow in the Department of Physical Education for Women, effective May 15, 1942. Dr. Hartman read a letter from the War Department appointing Colonel John H. Gibson, Boise, Idaho, as Professor of Military Science and Tactics at the University of Nevada, effective August 1, 1942. Mr. Gorman presented a report on the Hartung Estate. Mr. Gorman made a report on the Gymnasium. Dr. Olmsted moved that the Executive Committee be authorized to use their judgment in making changes in the heating plant. Mr. Gorman presented the statement of General Funds. Mr. Ross discussed the Social Welfare courses at the University. Mr. Ross discussed the matter of a separate Department of Journalism at the University. Mrs. Wardin moved that the matter of the Alumnus Book be left in the hands of the President.
