UCCSN Board of Regents' Meeting Minutes

April 21-22, 1939

Volume 5 - Pages 251-252

                       April 21, 1939

The Executive Committee of the Board of Regents met at the Uni-
versity at 11 o'clock Friday morning April 21, 1939, all members
and Dr. Hartman being present.

Dr. Hartman wished instruction as to when the division of author-
ity in regard to the athletic setup should be effective. After
general discussion, Mrs. Wardin moved that the Regents turn over
to the students at once control of all arrangements which concern
the conduct of major intercollegiate athletics beginning with the
Fall semester of this year, but that the University Administra-
tion remain in charge of athletics for this Spring until May
15th. Vote:

    Judge Brown Aye
    Mrs. Wardin Aye
    Mr. Ross Aye

It is understood in this connection that Messrs. Martie, Scranton
and Coleman are to be retained in service in the Department of
Physical Education and Athletics for Men.

Dr. Hartman read a letter of April 21, 1939 from Mr. Dashiell
wherein he asked:

1. If he should be given "notice" at the May meeting of the
Board of Regents, with the subsequent 5 months ending some
time in October, if it would be possible for him to begin
employment at some other institution (assuming that the
Board of Athletic Control may not name him Director of
Athletics) on September 1, 1939, and

2. If he should become employed by some other institution at
that time, would the salary obligation of the University of
Nevada terminate at the time he began work in another in-

Dr. Hartman was unanimously authorized to advise Mr. Dashiell
that he might terminate his services with this University as a
member of the staff of the Department of Physical Education and
Athletics for Men at any time he chooses between July 31, 1939 -
the end of his salary year - and the expiration of the 5 months'
"notice" he will probably receive from the Regents on May 13th,
the termination, without any slightest discredit to himself, of
his services in the above Department, and that his salary for
the interim 5 months will be continued to him so long as he
remains in the service of our University up to October 13th.

David Goldwater, Student Body President, appeared before the Com-
mittee and was advised that the Regents took exception to the
appointment of a member of the Block N Society by the Society to
membership on the Board of Athletic Control, since the recommen-
dation of the Alumni Committee, as adopted by the Regents, spe-
cifically stated that a member of the Block N Society was to be
elected by the Student Body to placement on the Board of Athletic
Control, and, until this had been done, the Regents would con-
sider there was a vacancy on the Board of Athletic Control.
