The meeting was called to order by Chairman Buchanan at 4:10 P.M.
Mr. Buchanan noted that the special meeting of the Board was
called for the purpose of designating an Interim President for
UNR.
Acting Chancellor Baepler reviewed the procedure followed on the
UNR Campus for the development of a recommendation to the Board
for an Interim President, noting that since there was no proce-
dure established in the Bylaws or the Code for selection of an
Interim President, it was determined that a combined group con-
sisting of the Academic Council and the Faculty Senate Executive
Board, plus student and alumni representatives, would serve as an
Ad Hoc Committee for this purpose. Dr. Baepler further noted
that after several extended sessions, interviews with several
people, the Ad Hoc Committee had unanimously recommended Dr.
Joseph Crowley to serve as Interim President for the period of
time required. Dr. Baepler stated that he was pleased to endorse
that recommendation and proposed that Dr. Crowley be appointed to
serve as Interim President of UNR through the 1978-79 academic
year.
Following Dr. Baepler's recommendation, Ms. Chambers, Chairman of
the UNR Faculty Senate, further commented on the procedure fol-
lowed by the Campus groups and expressed the unanimous support
of that group for the appointment of Dr. Crowley.
Dr. Crowley spoke briefly concerning his tenure at the University
and his activities in addition to his teaching assignments in the
Department of Political Science. He also commented on his views
of the role of an Interim President and how he would approach
such an assignment.
Mr. Ross moved approval of the recommendation that Dr. Joseph
Crowley be appointed Interim President, effective immediately
and continuing through the 1978-79 academic year. Motion sec-
onded by Mr. Karamanos, carried by the following roll call vote:
Yes - Dr. Anderson, Mr. Karamanos, Dr. Lombardi, Miss Mason,
Mr. Ross, Mr. James Buchanan
Abstain - Mrs. Fong
Mrs. Fong then changed her vote to yes.
Meeting adjourned at 4:30 P.M.
