A special meeting of the Board of Regents was held at their
Office in the Dormitory building on Wednesday, January 16, 1895
at 9:30 A.M., same being called by Regent H. L. Fish. Present:
W. E. F. Deal, H. L. Fish and H. S. Starrett.
The newly elected members, W. E. F. Deal and H. S. Starrett,
having qualified the Board organized as follows.
On motion of W. E. F. Deal, seconded by H. S. Starrett, H. L.
Fish was elected President of the Board and Geo. H. Taylor,
Secretary.
Minutes of the meeting held December 20, 1894 were read and, on
motion of Mr. Fish, were approved. Balance sheets showing the
funds on hand January 1, 1895 were also read.
On motion from Mr. Deal, seconded by Mr. Starrett, the last
Wednesday of each month was fixed as the regular meeting day of
the Board.
By invitation of the Board and the President of the University,
Senator Sunnyfield, Assemblymen Beck, Hogan and Stanley of Washoe
County, Wieland of Elko and Allen of Eureka were present at the
meeting.
President Stubbs presented his monthly report and addressed the
meeting, making many suggestions for improvement in the standards
and efficiency of the School. He advised a change in the
curriculum and that the Normal School be known by the name under
which it had been established by law, Nevada State Normal School,
and that it should take its place as a district branch of the
University. He reviewed in detail the needs of the Institution
and the hopes of bringing it up to a standard that would compare
favorably with any College in the country. A number of questions
were asked by those present and several important matters
thoroughly discussed.
The Board and Legislators visited the buildings and different
Departments, including the Dormitory, and were convinced of the
ideas of the President concerning a new and modern equipped
Dormitory and Dining Hall.
No further business appearing, the Board adjourned to meet on
Wednesday January 30th.
