                       January 3, 1921

The Regents met in the Office of the President of the University
on January 3, 1921, at 11 o'clock.  There were present Regents
Hood, Curler, North and Talbot and President Clark.  Regent Pratt
came later.

Regent North moved that Judge Curler be made temporary Chairman
of the Board, seconded by Mrs. Hood.  Vote:

    Mrs. Hood            Aye
    Mr. North            Aye
    Judge Talbot         Aye

Regent North moved that the minutes of the meetings of December
31, 1920 be approved, seconded by Mrs. Hood.  Vote:

    Mrs. Hood            Aye
    Mr. North            Aye
    Judge Curler         Aye
    Judge Talbot         Aye

The first order of business was the election of a Chairman of
the Board of Regents.

Mr. North:  "I should like to say that in view of the fact that
Judge Curler has served longest on the Board and has given a
number of years of very efficient and effective service and is
perhaps far better posted than any of us on the work of the
Board and more closely associated with it, I will place in nomi-
nation Judge Curler's name as Chairman of the Board of Regents."
Seconded by Mrs. Hood.  Vote:

    Mrs. Hood            Aye
    Mr. North            Aye
    Judge Talbot         Aye

There being no other nominations for Chairman, Regent North moved
that Judge Curler be elected Chairman of the Board of Regents.
Seconded by Mrs. Hood.  Vote:

    Mrs. Hood            Aye
    Mr. North            Aye
    Judge Talbot         Aye

Nominations for members of the Executive Committee were next in
order.  Judge Curler placed in nomination the name of Mr. North
as one of the members and Mrs. Hood placed in nomination the name
of Mr. Pratt.  The Regents signified their approval of Mr. North
and Mr. Pratt acting as members of this Committee by the follow-
ing vote:

    Mr. North            Aye for Mr. Pratt
    Judge Curler         Aye
    Judge Talbot         Aye

The following Committees were appointed by Chairman Curler:

    Finance Committee - Mrs. Hood, Mr. North and Mr. Pratt.

    Judge Talbot moved that the Chairman of the Board should
    also be a member of this Committee, seconded by Mr. North.
    Vote:

        Mr. North            Aye
        Judge Talbot         Aye

    Property Committee - Judge Talbot

    Instruction Committee - Mrs. Hood

    Library Committee - Mr. Pratt

    Student Welfare Committee - Mr. North

Upon motion of Mr. North, seconded by Mrs. Hood, Miss Beckwith
was elected Secretary of the Board by the following vote:

    Mr. Pratt            Aye
    Judge Curler         Aye

President Clark and Comptroller Gorman were re-elected to their
respective offices to serve at the will of the Board and the
present Deans, Professors and Instructors were reappointed at
the salaries they are now being paid.  Following is the vote:

    Judge Curler         Aye

On the recommendation of Colonel Ryan, President Clark recommend-
ed that First Sergeant E. E. Vaughn and Sergeant Wm. E. Leach,
assistants to our Miliary Commandant, Colonel J. P. Ryan, be
placed upon the University payroll for $20 per month each, dating
from January 1, 1921.  Vote:

    Mr. Pratt            Aye

On the recommendation of Director Norcross, President Clark rec-
ommended that Mrs. Margaret Johnson Schuyler receive a salary of
$250 per month as for the 6 months beginning January 1, 1921.
Mr. North made the motion, seconded by Judge Talbot.  Vote:

    Mr. North            Aye
    Judge Talbot         Aye
    Mr. Pratt            Aye
    Judge Curler         Aye

Judge Talbot told of an interview which he had had with a Mr.
Nevins and was asked by the Board to see President Barrows,
or some other official, of the University of California re-
garding their knowledge of a gift to the University of Califor-
nia and to the University of Nevada from the Searles Estate and
to report his findings at the next meeting of the Board.
