Presidential searches

It is natural in these changing and difficult times to have turnover and change in leadership. The Nevada System of Higher Education has eight institutions and we are currently running presidential searches for three of them. These searches arise through a combination of reasons, including an untimely passing, a retirement after many years of service and a president leaving for new opportunities. It is a unique mix as we are searching for the flagship University, a growing state college in Henderson, and a rural community college.  The University of Nevada, Reno was our first institution and it serves the land grant mission of the state, as well as being an emerging research institution. Nevada State College is our newest institution that is rapidly growing and primarily serves first generation students and culturally diverse Nevadans. Great Basin College has its base in Elko and has a service territory of over 60,000 square miles. Needless to say, the Board is challenged with finding three different types of presidents to serve the institutions and the communities in which they reside.

Presidential search committees are comprised of six Regents and an Institutional Advisory Committee comprised of faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members. All of these individuals take their responsibility seriously and are putting in many hours to try and find the best possible candidates to run our campuses. Regent James Dean Leavitt is chairing the search at the University of Nevada, Reno; Regent Mark Alden is chairing the search at Nevada State College; and Regent Kevin C. Melcher is chairing the search at Great Basin College. These three, and their fellow Regents, will be putting in numerous hours as will our staff that has to serve all three committees in addition to their duties for all of the operations of the Board. Everybody will be working hard over the next several months, but we all hope to have the best presidents in place to fill out the Cabinet of Presidents. These three individuals will join with the other five presidents and the Chancellor to create our budget plan for the 2013 Legislature and to provide leadership as we try to build a better Nevada. I thank all of the members of the search committees, our presidents, and our staff for their commitment to higher education and the citizens of Nevada.
