Regents Select Dr. Maurizio Trevisan as Vice Chancellor & CEO of UNHSS

Reno, Nevada // August 16, 2007 -- The Nevada Board of Regents unanimously approved the selection of Dr. Maurizio Trevisan as executive vice chancellor and chief executive officer of the University of Nevada Health Sciences System.

Working with the executive search firm, Academic Search Consulting, a committee was formed to conduct the national search and make a recommendation to the full Board of Regents. Chaired by Buck Wong, committee members included Dr. David Ashley, Lynn Atcheson, Dr. Mark Doubrava, Regent Dorothy Gallagher, Dr. Milton Glick, and Bill Welch.

Dr. Trevisan is an internationally known physician/epidemiologist in the field of cardiovascular and chronic disease. He is a professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Family Medicine and Exercise and Nutrition Sciences and serves as dean in the School of Public Health and Health Professions in the State University of New York, University at Buffalo (UB). In addition, he is a senior researcher with UB's Research Institute on Addictions and is an adjunct professor in Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago. He serves as co-principal investigator with the UB Clinical Vanguard Center of the Women's Health Initiative (a multi-center study aimed at investigating ways to prevent major chronic conditions in post-menopausal women), and as director of the Health in Housing Center (part of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center program).

He joined the University at Buffalo in 1985 as an assistant professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine and served as its interim chairman from 1991-1992, and chairman from 1993- 2003. He was interim dean for the School of Health Related Professions from 2001-2002 and continued serving as interim dean when it became the newly formed School of Public Health and Health Professions in January 2003. Dr. Trevisan was officially named founding dean of the school and has served in this role since January 2005.

Author of more than 235 publications in high impact journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, Annals of Internal Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine, he has extensive experience in directing and conducting multi-center and international collaborative studies. Dr. Trevisan's research interests focus on the role of life style and metabolic factors in the etiology and prevention of cardiovascular disease with a special focus on the role of diet (Mediterranean diet in particular) and alcohol use (special emphasis on the role of drinking pattern i.e., the way people drink and the quantity). More recently he has focused on the relationship between oral and systemic health (periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease and the role of infection and inflammation).

Dr. Trevisan earned his M.D. from the University of Naples Medical School (Italy) and his M.S. in epidemiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
