Regents Approve New Admissions
Standards
Las
Vegas, Nevada / June
8, 2006 -- The Board of Regents today unanimously approved an
increase in the admissions standards for Nevada’s two public universities.
Starting in the fall of 2008, the minimum GPA required for admission
at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of Nevada,
Reno will be raised from 2.75 to 3.0.Previous action taken by the Board
of Regents in 2001 mandated that the 3.0 requirement would not take effect
until 2010. In discussions held in 2005 and 2006, there was a movement
to shorten that timeline to 2007. A compromise was created for 2008.In
addition, SAT or ACT scores will be used for the first time in the fall
of 2007 when considering a student’s admissions qualifications
if the GPA standards are not met.NSHE staff will conduct a study of the
new criteria for the fall 2006 and 2007 years. This study will be completed
in time that the full GPA implementation can be delayed if a disproportionate
impact on minorities occurs.
