Crowley named top candidate for UNR interim presidency
RENO, Nevada Board of Regents Chair Bret Whipple, Vice Chair Dorothy
Gallagher, and Chancellor James E. Rogers announced today that they are
recommending that Dr. Joe Crowley be appointed the interim president of the
University of Nevada, Reno.
Crowley, who previously served as the universitys president for nearly 23
years, was selected after the two regents and chancellor met with campus
representatives last week. The announcement was made during a press conference
held today on the UNR campus.
We listened to what UNR students, faculty and staff wanted in an interim
president and balanced that with the expectations of the Board of
Regents, said Whipple. After those conversations, it became obvious
that our best option was Dr. Crowley, even though he had not submitted his
name for consideration.
Crowleys name will be forwarded to the full, 13-member Board of Regents
for consideration at their next meeting on Dec. 1 at the University of Nevada,
Las Vegas. If approved by the Board, Crowley could begin the interim presidency
as early as December 5. Whipple, Gallagher and Rogers will present a
compensation package to the regents at next weeks meeting.
Crowley left the UNR presidency in January 2001, after nearly 23 years in the
position. He returned to the faculty as Regents Professor and President
Emeritus, teaching American political and constitutional history. He formally
retired in January 2003, but then served as the interim president of San Jose
State University for one year.
The Nevada System of Higher Education, comprised of two doctoral-granting
universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one
environmental research institute, serves the educational and job training needs
of the nations fastest growing state. As Nevadas only system of
higher education, the NSHE provides educational opportunities to more than
100,000 students and is governed by the Nevada Board of Regents.
