CHANCELLOR OFFERS ENROLLMENT PROTECTION TO NEVADA NATIONAL GUARD VOLUNTEERS
LAS VEGAS Chancellor James E. Rogers announced today that his office
will be working closely with Nevada colleges to ensure that students who
volunteered to go to New Orleans with the Nevada National Guard will not have
to worry about their enrollment status while away.
I applaud the bravery and selflessness of these brave young men and women
of the Nevada National Guard, said Rogers. While they dropped
everything in their lives to help Americans devastated by Hurricane Katrina, it
is only right that we protect and preserve their enrollment status as college
students.
Earlier today, Rogers issued a directive to the presidents of the eight
institutions of the Nevada System of Higher Education to do everything in their
power to assist students in the Guard who have volunteered to go to New
Orleans.
Preliminary figures provided by the Guard show that approximately 175 troops
have been sent to New Orleans for at least a two-week tour of duty. Higher
education officials will be working with the Guard on Tuesday to identify those
soldiers who are enrolled in an NSHE institution and then notify faculty so
the students enrollment status will be protected.
In addition, the Nevada Board of Regents will be considering
fee waivers for those students displaced by the hurricane at the Boards
next meeting September 22-23.
The Nevada Board of Regents is the elected, 13-member governing body for the
Nevada System of Higher Education. Comprising two doctoral-granting
universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one
environmental research institute, the NSHE serves the educational and job
training needs of the nations fastest growing state. As Nevadas
only system of higher education, the NSHE provides educational opportunities to
more than 100,000 students.
