Selects Larson as Assistant Chancellor
ELKO, Nev. – The Board of
Regents today approved the appointment of Dr. Trudy Larson as assistant
chancellor to Interim Chancellor Jim Rogers.
Dr. Larson will receive a
salary of $165,000 a year, and she will begin her one-year appointment June 14.
She has been a member of the department of pediatrics at the University of
Nevada School of Medicine since 1984.
“Dr. Larson’s academic
background, coupled with her familiarity with Nevada higher education, made her
an excellent choice for this position and an excellent complement to the talents
of Interim Chancellor Rogers,” said Board Chair Stavros S. Anthony.
Most recently, Dr. Larson
served as professor of pediatrics at the School of Medicine. Previously she
served as chair of the Department of Pediatrics from 1995 – 1999 and as
associate dean for outreach from 1999 – 2002 at the School of Medicine. Dr.
Larson also has served on numerous committees, including the Institutional
Review Board for Biomedical Research and the faculty senate, where she served as
chair from 2003 – 2004.
Dr. Larson attended the
University of California, Irvine and University of California, Davis and
completed her pediatric infectious diseases fellowship at the University of
California, Los Angeles. Her major field of interest is HIV/AIDS and she has
been active in the caring for HIV patients at the HOPES clinic in Reno, in
training health professionals about HIV throughout the state and nationally, and
in conducting funded research in HIV/AIDS.
In addition to her clinical
and teaching experience, Dr. Larson has been active in the community. She serves
as a consultant to the Washoe County District Health Department for communicable
diseases, child health and bioterrorism, and chairs two state advisory
committees on immunizations and Medicaid. She was inducted into the Nevada
Women’s Fund Hall of Fame in 1996 and received the Distinguished Physician award
from the Nevada State Medical Association in 1999.
The Nevada Board of Regents
is the elected, 13-member governing body for the University and Community
College System of Nevada. Comprising two doctoral granting universities, a state
college, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research
institute, the UCCSN serves the educational and job training needs of the
nation's fastest growing state. As Nevada's only system of higher education, the
UCCSN provides educational opportunities to nearly 98,000 students.
