Regents Take Action on Violations at CCSN
LAS VEGAS—After hearing the results of a two-month investigation
involving personnel at the Community College of Southern Nevada, the Board of
Regents last night voted to reassign the college’s president and to take
further action to resolve issues brought to light from the investigation.
“The Board of Regents was presented with compelling evidence
of serious violations of Board of Regents policies by President Ron Remington
and Chief Advisor John Cummings,” said Dr. Stavros Anthony, chair of the
13-member Board. “After two days of hearing that evidence and reviewing
more than 1,000 pages of documentation, including detailed statements from both
individuals, we needed to take action.”
“We cannot have our college presidents and senior staff
willfully being insubordinate and ignoring directives from their superiors in
the chain of command. Last night, our Board sent a message that that behavior
will not be tolerated,” said Anthony.
Based upon the information presented during the investigation,
the Board identified serious problems that will be addressed immediately, according
to Anthony.
“Our investigation began by examining alleged personnel
actions and unfortunately, more troubling issues surfaced during the course
of the investigation,” he said. “The Board of Regents has the responsibility
to insure that our institutions are run with integrity and fiscal responsibility.
Individuals who think they cannot play by the rules will have a price to pay.”
In the weeks ahead, the Board will be examining:
1) Policies as they
relate to UCCSN employees holding public office.
2) Lobbying activities at the Nevada legislature.
3) Host expenditures of UCCSN employees.
4) Hiring practices at all UCCSN institutions.
The Nevada Board of Regents is the elected, 13-member governing
body for the University and Community College System of Nevada. Comprising two
doctoral granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community
colleges and one environmental research institute, the UCCSN serves the educational
and job training needs of the nation's fastest growing state. As Nevada's only
system of higher education, the UCCSN provides educational opportunities to
more than 90,000 students.
