Five Regents Take Oath of Office

LAS VEGAS, Nevada—Three newly elected members, as well as two returning members, took their oath of office today during a brief ceremony held at the Charleston campus of the Community College of Southern Nevada.

Thalia Dondero and Howard Rosenberg are each serving their second consecutive Board term. Dr. Stavros Anthony, Dr. Jack Lund Schofield, and Bret Whipple are each serving their first term as Regent.

“Each of our new and returning colleagues brings to the Board a wealth of knowledge, experience, and character," said Board Chair Douglas Seastrand. “The entire Board is eager to work with them to discuss and resolve the many issues that face higher education in Nevada.”

The Regents who took the oath of office at the beginning of today's meeting are:

  • Dr. Stavros Anthony (Clark County, District 12) is a 22-year veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and is currently a captain charged with overseeing Metro’s Northeast Area Command. He is also an experienced educator who has taught at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the Community College of Southern Nevada. Regent Anthony is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and holds a doctorate in sociology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
  • Thalia Dondero (Clark Count, District 3) was elected to the Board of Regents in 1996 and reelected in 2002. Regent Dondero currently serves as vice chair, and prior to that completed two successful terms as Board chair. Regent Dondero has been a resident of Las Vegas since 1943. She served 20 years with the Clark County Commissioners, including three terms as chair and one term as vice chair. Currently she serves on the board of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, is chair of the Advisory Committee of the Housing Division of the Department of Business and Industry for the State of Nevada, and serves on the Summerlin Hospital Board of Trustees.
  • Howard Rosenberg (Washoe County, District 10) was elected to the Board of Regents in 1996 and reelected in 2002. He served as vice chair of the Board from July 2001-June 2002. Currently Regent Rosenberg is a professor of art, art education, design and film studies as well as the director of advisement in the art department for the University of Nevada, Reno. He earned his master's in fine arts education/design from Harvard University Graduate Schools of Education and Design and his bachelor of science degree in education/fine arts from Massachusetts College of Art.
  • Dr. Jack Lund Schofield (Clark County, District 5) currently teaches science at Cannon Middle School, is CEO of Exclusive Homes & Products, and is president of JS Development. Regent Schofield has also served as a Nevada state senator and assembly member, and was a candidate for governor in the 1970s. A veteran World War II fighter pilot and former school administrator, Regent Schofield holds a doctorate in education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
  • Bret Whipple (Clark County, District 2) is an attorney licensed to practice law in Nevada and Arizona and whose primary area of concentration is criminal defense. His legal experience includes numerous jury trials, preliminary hearings and oral arguments before the Nevada Supreme Court. In addition, Regent Whipple is a certified public accountant with licenses to practice in Arizona, New York, Pennsylvania and Nevada. He holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Arizona College of Law, and a bachelor of arts in economics/accounting from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.

This year marks the first year the Board is comprised of 13 members. The Nevada Legislature voted to increase the Board's membership from 11 to 13 during its 2001 session.

The Nevada Board of Regents is the elected, 13-member governing body for the University and Community College System of Nevada. Comprising two doctoral granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one internationally acclaimed research institute, the UCCSN serves the educational and job training needs of the nation's fastest growing state. As Nevada's only system of higher education, the UCCSN provides educational opportunities to nearly 100,000 students.
