Regents Approve New Programs, Nepotism Policy and Land Acquisition

LAS VEGAS—The Nevada Board of Regents took action during their Oct. 9-10 meeting to add new programs, strengthen nepotism policies and approve a land acquisition request in Clark County by the University of Nevada, Reno.

NEW PROGRAMS
On Wednesday, the Board approved the following new program proposals:

  • Bachelor of Arts, Economics at Nevada State College
  • Master of Science, Management Information Systems, University of Nevada, Las Vegas

NEPOTISM POLICY
The Board also approved an amendment to fortify the University and Community College System of Nevada’s policy on nepotism. Although institutions have anti-nepotism policies in place, the new amendment will provide uniformity to existing policies so no UCCSN employees would be able to hire and supervise a relative.

UNR ACQUISITION OF LAND IN CLARK COUNTY
On Thursday, the Board approved a request by the University of Nevada, Reno to begin steps to acquire approximately 7.5 acres in Clark County for the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. UNR will submit an application to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management to lease, and ultimately acquire, the land located near I-215 and Windmill. The total cost of the land acquisition is expected to be $200 over a five-year period.

The new office will provide community-based education in the areas of: children, youth and family; health and nutrition; environment; private and commercial horticulture; master gardeners; 4-H; and community and economic development. A request to construct a building at the site will be presented to the Board at a later date.

The Nevada Board of Regents is the elected, 11-member governing body for the University and Community College System of Nevada. Comprising two doctoral granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one internationally acclaimed research institute, the UCCSN serves the educational and job training needs of the nation's fastest growing state. As Nevada's only system of higher education, the UCCSN provides educational opportunities to nearly 100,000 students.
