New Regent to Stop Teaching

LAS VEGAS—Regent-Elect Stavros Anthony announced today that he will step aside from his part-time teaching responsibilities at two Nevada institutions to avoid a perceived conflict of interest.

Anthony, whose full-time job is serving as captain with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, has been a part-time teacher at the Community College of Southern Nevada for the past 15 years where he taught classes in political science and criminal justice. He has also been a part-time faculty member at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for the past four years where he taught sociology and criminal justice courses.

“Since I will be responsible for making decisions that impact both of those institutions, I do not want to give the public the appearance of a conflict of interest,” said Anthony who was recently elected to the newly formed district 12. “I have decided that the wisest course of action is to not teach at any UCCSN institution during my time as a Regent.”

The Nevada Board of Regents is the elected, 11-member governing body for the University and Community College System of Nevada. The Board recently added two new seats during the 2002 election for a total of 13 members starting January 1, 2003. Comprising two doctoral granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one internationally acclaimed research institute, the UCCSN serves the educational and job training needs of the nation's fastest growing state. As Nevada's only system of higher education, the UCCSN provides educational opportunities to more than 90,000 students.
