State
College Search Moves Forward
LAS VEGAS-A
joint Board of Regents and community advisory committee moved forward today
in their search for a new president for Nevada State College.
Chaired by Regent Mark Alden,
the committee met Tuesday morning to discuss recruiting strategies and materials
in order to attract top national candidates. The recruitment and initial candidate
selection process will be handled by Dr. Jean Dowdall of the executive search
firm A.T. Kearney, based in Washington, D.C.
"We have a very important
charge before us: To select a visionary leader and manager for Nevada's first
state college," said Alden. "This process and the ultimate decision
to hire a president are one of the most critical actions the Board of Regents
can make. This decision will not only chart the course of our newest institution,
but will also impact the education we provide to thousands of students."
Recruitment advertisements
are slated to begin in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Hispanic Outlook,
Black Issues in Higher Education and Women in Higher Education.
The committee's next meeting
is scheduled for July 12 in Las Vegas with finalist interviews tentatively scheduled
for mid-August.
In addition to Alden, members
of the regents' committee include Dr. Jill Derby, Thalia Dondero, Dorothy Gallagher
and Douglas Seastrand.
Members of the advisory
committee to the regents include: Selma Bartlett, Lois Becker, Richard Bryan,
Connie Carpenter, Caesar Caviglia, Sherry Colquitt, Doris Femenella, Terry Graves,
Somer Hollingsworth, Bob Johns, Gary Johnson, Bill Martin, Alice Martz, Marydean
Martin, Larry Mason, Paul Meacham, Pat Miltenberger, Phillip Peckman, Tony Sanchez,
Gene Segerblom and Dan Stewart.
Nevada State College is
the newest public, four-year college in Nevada. Its focus will be baccalaureate
degrees; and its faculty's priority will be teaching. The core curriculum will
be aimed at meeting current critical labor shortages in Nevada - qualified teachers
and nurses, as well as offering a strong liberal arts program. Dr. Christine
Chairsell was appointed by the Board of Regents on March 7 to serve as acting
president.
The Nevada Board of Regents
is the elected, 11-member governing body for the University and Community College
System of Nevada. Comprising two doctoral granting universities, a state college,
four comprehensive community colleges and one internationally acclaimed research
institute, the UCCSN serves the educational and job training needs of the nation's
fastest growing state. As Nevada's only system of higher education, the UCCSN
provides educational opportunities to nearly 100,000 students.
