President
Richard Moore Requests Reassignment
LAS VEGAS-
Dr. Richard Moore, founding president of Nevada State College, has submitted
a request to Chancellor Jane Nichols to be voluntarily reassigned to the faculty,
which is in agreement with his current 2-year contract. In making this request,
President Moore submitted the following statement:
After
careful consideration, I have decided to ask the UCCSN Board of Regents to
reassign me from my position as President of Nevada State College to a teaching
position at the college.
In my
collective experience as a college president for 27 years, I have observed
that visionary projects and dreams call for extraordinary persistence and
energy to bring them to fruition. It is also clear that when detractors focus
on the lead person, at some point it is wise to step aside and let the project
continue.
I believe
that this professional decision will permit the up-coming opening of Nevada
State College to proceed expeditiously.
I am profoundly grateful to the people of Nevada, in particular, Governor
Guinn, the Nevada State College Foundation, the Nevada State Legislators,
the UCCSN Board of Regents, Chancellor Nichols, the City of Henderson, and
literally hundreds and hundreds of citizens for their sustained and continued
support of Nevada State College. Acting as a model for America, private community
donors have come forward to fund the planning needed this year to open the
public college this September.
I believe
that in future years the citizens of Nevada will benefit greatly from this
state college whose first mission is to educate high-quality teachers and
nurses for Nevada.
My commitment to meeting this vision has sustained me through the professional
challenges of the past two years. Of equal strength will be my commitment
to the work of the next president, and the faculty and staff of Nevada State
College.
Thank you Nevada for letting me carry the banner of hope that is represented
by this new college.
The Board of Regents will take action on President Moore's request at their
next meeting on March 6-7 in Reno.
The Nevada
Board of Regents (www.nevada.edu) is the elected, 11-member governing body
for the University and Community College System of Nevada. Comprising two
doctoral granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community
colleges and one internationally acclaimed research institute, the UCCSN serves
the educational and job training needs of the nation's fastest growing state.
As Nevada's only system of higher education, the UCCSN provides educational
opportunities to nearly 100,000 students.
