Summer Distance Education Classes Catalog Now Online

LAS VEGAS -- Students wanting to start their college education or take extra classes during the summer term are encouraged to register for summer distance education classes.

The UCCSN announced today the availability of an abbreviated catalog of distance education courses available for the 2001 summer term at the following four Nevada institutions: Community College of Southern Nevada, Western Nevada Community College, University of Nevada, Las Vegas and University of Nevada, Reno (additional independent study courses can be found by linking to UNR from the catalog).

The catalog, which can be found at http://www.scsr.nevada.edu/disted, includes more than 70 distance education classes in 13 disciplines--from the arts to computers to courses for teachers. Many of the offered courses can be used to fulfill lower-division requirements at Nevada's community colleges or universities.

The summer catalog includes 63 web-based courses and 45 courses in which high school students may enroll.

"Taking a course over the summer is a wonderful opportunity for high school students to complete a college course before the start of fall term," said Chancellor Jane Nichols. "It's a wonderful opportunity to not only earn college credit, but to test your readiness for college as well."

The catalog also provides links to several self-tests that can help students evaluate whether they will learn effectively via distance education.

In addition, the site features a "Student FAQs" section that answers students' most frequently asked questions about taking distance education courses within the UCCSN. Phone numbers are also listed so that prospective and current students can seek assistance from distance education professionals from each institution.

The release of the Fall 2001 Distance Education Catalog is expected in mid-June.

Comprising two doctoral-granting universities, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research institution, the University and Community College System of Nevada serves the educational and job training needs of the nation's fastest growing state. As Nevada's only system of higher education, the UCCSN provides educational opportunities to nearly 100,000 students.
