Finalists to be Announced for Nevada State College Campus Design Competition
HENDERSON Community members can get their first glimpse of what Nevada's first state college could look like when the designs from a national architectural competition are unveiled April 1.
A jury of local and national judges will meet March 31 to review the entries of 36 registered competitors who have come from across the country to participate in the Nevada State College Campus Design Competition.
After reviewing the entries, the jury will select 3-5 finalists and announce their decision at a public reception to be held at Foothills High School in Henderson (See below for a list of jurors).
"This reception is a chance for the community to see what their new college will look like," said Dr. Richard Moore, founding president of Nevada State College. "We have had the incredible fortune of having truly talented and remarkable individuals help us jury this competition of 36 of the most talented architects in America."
Open to the public, the reception will feature the work from all of the competition participants. The reception will be from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. and will be held in the cafeteria of Foothill High School at 800 College Dr., across from the Henderson campus of the Community College of Southern Nevada.
The finalists will then make a presentation to the Board of Regents' Architecture Task Force on April 4. The task force, co-chaired by Regent Howard Rosenberg and Richard Kellogg, will deliberate on April 4 and select a final recommendation for consideration by the Regents at their April 6 workshop.
The Nevada State College Campus Design Competition challenged architects, landscape architects, urban designers and planners to explore the idea of developing a new campus within one of the nation's fastest growing communities. The competitors were tasked with capturing the imagination of the local community while acknowledging the interplay of the physical environment and the pursuit of ideas, knowledge and wisdom.
Nevada State College at Henderson has been founded to help craft high quality K-12 teachers, health professionals and other professionals needed by the State of Nevada. Initially, the Henderson campus of the college will host 1,000 full-time students when it opens with enrollment expected to reach 4,000 full-time students within the first five years of operation.
Although a site change for the college was recently reported in the local media, this change will not affect the competition. Competition participants were asked to proceed with their design proposals.
