Three Finalists Selected in Nevada State College Campus Design Competition

HENDERSON – Three finalists were announced today by a panel of architectural experts charged with selecting a design for Nevada's first state college.

A jury of local and national judges met March 31 to review the entries of registered competitors who had come from across the country to participate in the Nevada State College Campus Design Competition.

At a reception held this afternoon at Foothill High School in Henderson, the jury announced the selection of the following three finalists: Field Paoli Architects of San Francisco; Konyk Architecture, PC of Brooklyn; and RNL Design of Denver.

"The jury looked at how the entries approached education, the site and the interaction of people," said juror Christopher Knight, chief art critic for the Los Angeles Times. "The three finalists were very aware of designing a college for an urban setting, rather than designing for the traditional Jeffersonian setting."

Upon approval of their eligibility, each of the three finalists will receive 1/3 of the $100,000 prize money donated by BMI.

The finalists will make a presentation on April 4 to the Board of Regents' Architecture Task Force, which is co-chaired by Regent Howard Rosenberg and Richard Kellogg, president of BMI. The task force will present a final recommendation for consideration and approval by the full Board of Regents at their April 6 workshop in Henderson.

The Nevada State College Campus Design Competition challenged architects, landscape architects, urban designers and planners to explore the idea of developing a new campus within one of the nation's fastest growing communities. The competitors were tasked with capturing the imagination of the local community while acknowledging the interplay of the physical environment and the pursuit of ideas, knowledge and wisdom.

Nevada State College at Henderson has been founded to help craft high quality K-12 teachers, health professionals and other professionals needed by the State of Nevada. Initially, the Henderson campus of the college will host 1,000 full-time students when it opens with enrollment expected to reach 4,000 full-time students within the first five years of operation.
