Committees Named to Find Replacement
for UNR President

LAS VEGAS -- Dr. Jill Derby, chair of the Nevada Board of Regents, today announced the formation of two committees who will begin the search for a new president at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The Regents' Presidential Search Committee and the Institutional Advisory Committees will work in tandem to organize a framework for the search as well as develop a leadership profile for the new president.

Dr. Joe Crowley, who has lead the institution for the past 22 years, announced last month that he will retire on December 31 to return to the classroom.

"It is an awesome responsibility chairing the committee that will select the person to fill the shoes of a legendary president who is the longest serving president of a major university in the United States," said Regent Doug Hill, chair of the Regent's Presidential Search Committee. "When the final selection is made, I hope the people of Nevada will be proud of the job we have done."

Committee members include:

Both committees will work together throughout the process with a recommendation from the Institutional Advisory Committee to the Regents' committee. The Regents' committee then votes a recommendation to present to the full Board for final approval.

Although Crowley will be stepping down at the end of the year, it is not expected that the search committees will have completed their work by that time. The Board will name an interim president at a later date with the anticipation that a new president could start by July 1, 2001.

Comprised of two doctoral-granting universities, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research institution, the University and Community College System of Nevada serves the educational and job training needs of the nation's fastest growing state. As Nevada's only system of higher education, the UCCSN provides educational opportunities to more than 90,000 students.
