Spring Distance Education Classes Catalog Now Online
LAS VEGAS - Today marked the unveiling of the UCCSN's online catalog for Nevada distance education classes for Spring 2001. The catalog, which can be found at http://www.scsr.nevada.edu/disted, includes distance education classes offered by Nevada's four community colleges and two universities.
The Spring 20001 catalog allows students to search for distance education courses by discipline, institution, course name or keyword. The web site also provides links to online registration for each institution.
"Each term, the number and variety of distance education courses offered by UCCSN institutions continue to grow," noted Chancellor Jane Nichols. "Students can now enroll in 160 web-based courses. The breadth and quality of these courses represent an enormous accomplishment on the part of UCCSN faculty."
The Spring 2001 Distance Education Catalog contains nearly 300 courses in 13 disciplines. This represents a growth of approximately 20 percent over the number of courses available through distance education in Fall 2000. College-level courses are offered in English, the humanities, math, science and social science as well as such career areas as business, computers, education, fire science and health. Additional UNR courses can be accessed by linking to the UNR website from the catalog. In addition, more than 185 courses can be taken by high school students to earn college credit while still in high school. This represents a growth of 30 percent over the number of courses open to high school students in Fall 2000.
The new catalog also provides links to several self-tests that can help students evaluate whether they will learn effectively via distance education.
In addition, the site features a "Student FAQs" section that answers students' most frequently-asked questions about taking distance education courses within the UCCSN. Phone numbers are also listed so that prospective and current students can seek assistance from distance education professionals from each institution.
Comprising two doctoral-granting universities, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research institution, the University and Community College System of Nevada serves the educational and job training needs of the nation's fastest growing state. As Nevada's only system of higher education, the UCCSN provides educational opportunities to nearly 100,000 students.
