Regents Narrow CCSN Presidential Hopefuls to Six

LAS VEGAS -- A committee of the Nevada Board of Regents today selected six finalists for consideration as the next president for the Community College of Southern Nevada.

The Regents' ad hoc CCSN Presidential Search Committee, which is chaired by Doug Seastrand of Las Vegas, announced the following candidates have been selected:

  • Dr. Robert A. Anderson, President, Colorado Northwestern Community College (Rangely, Colorado)
  • Dr. Deborah L. Floyd, Executive Assistant to the Chancellor, Special Projects, University of Kentucky, Lexington
  • Dr. Stephen C. Head, Executive Vice Chancellor for Education, Student and Community Development, North Harris Montgomery Community College District (Houston, Texas)
  • Dr. Shirley A. Reed, President, South Texas Community College (McAllen, Texas)
  • Dr. Diana Sloane, Vice Chancellor, Education and Technology Los Rios Community College District (Sacramento, California)
  • Dr. Frank R. Vivelo, President, Wharton County Junior College (Wharton, Texas)

"We had a nearly impossible job today narrowing our list of 12 highly qualified candidates down to six extraordinarily qualified candidates," said Seastrand. "Each of these presidential hopefuls are among the best higher education has to offer."

The 19-member joint committee, which consists of a six-member Regents' committee and a 13-member institutional advisory committee, met today for more than five hours to review the semi-finalists' backgrounds and qualifications.

In addition to Seastrand, members of the Board committee include Regents Jill Derby (ex-officio), David Phillips, Howard Rosenberg, Steve Sisolak and Tom Wiesner. Sitting in for Sisolak and Wiesner today were Regents Mark Alden and Tom Kirkpatrick.

In addition to formal interviews by the joint committee, members of the campus and community leaders will be invited to attend informal receptions to meet the finalists. The interviews and receptions are tentatively scheduled to be held between September 18-29.

The Regents' committee, which began the search process in March, hopes to bring their top candidate to the Board of Regents for final approval at the October 19-20 meeting in Fallon.

For nearly 30 years, the Community College of Southern Nevada has educated the work force that is the foundation of the region’s dynamic economic development. Featuring three main campuses and 50 academic centers in four counties, CCSN enrolls more than 35,000 students in 70 career programs--nearly equal to the combined student body of Nevada’s two universities.

Comprised of two doctoral-granting universities, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research institution, the University and Community College System of Nevada serves the educational and job training needs of the nation"s fastest growing state. As Nevada"s only system of higher education, the UCCSN provides educational opportunities to more than 90,000 students.
