FOR
UNLV PRESIDENT DR. CAROL C. HARTER

June 20, 1997 --- Reno, Nevada

The University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN) Board of Regents unanimously approved a second three-year contract for Dr. Carol Harter, President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The new contract will cover the period July 1, 1998 through June 30, 2001. (Dr. Harter is currently completing a three-year contract for the period, July 1, 1995- July 1, 1998.)

UCCSN Chancellor Richard Jarvis commented, "Dr. Harter has been a tremendous leader for UNLV, refocusing the university's mission on academics and student achievement. She has provided solid leadership to the campus, garnered very considerable private-sector financial support and launched critical new initiatives such as the Law School. I am proud of her accomplishments."

Dr. Carol C. Harter is the seventh president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, one of Nevada's two comprehensive universities. Prior to being named President and Professor of English at UNLV, Dr. Harter served as President of the State University of New York at Geneseo from 1989 to 1995. In both her presidencies, she has focused on strategic planning, increasing enrollment and retention of a diverse student body. She has also been successful in establishing quality programs that respond to community needs, in enhancing research opportunities and external funding, and in increasing public and private financial support. Prior to her service at Geneseo, Dr. Harter was a faculty member in English and an administrator at Ohio University, where she held the positions of Ombudsman, Vice President and Dean of Students and Vice President for Administration.

Dr. Harter is a three-time graduate of SUNY Binghamton. She earned a B.A. in English with Honors in 1964, an M.A. in 1967, and a Ph.D. in English and American Literature in 1970. Dr. Harter is the co-author of two books and has served on the boards of several national, state and local organizations dedicated to artistic, scientific, economic and social issues. She is also a member of the NCAA Presidents' Commission and the Western Athletic Conference representative to the newly formed NCAA Board of Directors.
