Cedric Crear, NSHE Board of Regents

Regent Cedric Crear was elected to the Board of Regents in 2006 and was retained in the 2012 election as the representative for District 1 in Clark County. He currently serves as chair of the Cultural Diversity and Title IX Compliance Committee. He is also a member of the Business, Finance and Facilities Committee, Investment Committee, Athletics Committee, and the ad hoc DRI President Search Committee. In July 2013, he was chosen to serve on the UNLV Campus Improvement Authority Board of Directors.

Why do you want to serve on the Board of Regents?

Crear: I wanted to find a way to serve my community. I believe higher education is critical to a community’s success and serving through the Board of Regents has been a way for me to make a positive impact. 

What strengths do you feel you bring to the Board of Regents?

Crear: I feel that being a minority brings a different, and healthy, perspective to our deliberations on the Board. Considering my background, I feel I can provide a voice for the voiceless. In addition, my service with numerous nonprofits, as well experience as a business owner brings, a sense of strength and fiscal responsibility to the Board.

What have been some of your proudest accomplishments while serving on the Board?

Crear: Near the top of my accomplishments, I would say working with my colleagues to establish a supply chain inclusion program for NSHE.  I also am proud of establishing the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Council (EDIC), as well as examining how the tenure track process affects minority professors.  We've also made progress in creating programs for first generation college students. And, of course, the ongoing efforts to help both UNLV and UNR become top tier research universities. 

What do you see as the opportunities and challenges ahead for NSHE?

Crear:  Budget constraints are always a challenge. We cannot continue to prosper if we are consistently making cuts. At some point, that has to stop. NSHE must be able to grow instead of regress. We can’t cut our way to even. We must continue to find ways to generate revenue to support the valuable programs our institutions provide to Nevada. We must also find ways to rebuild our faculty and staff back from the cuts of the recession.  

I also think that helping our growing minority population access a college education, and successfully complete their course of study, is important. We must continue to create a culture of openness and diverse ideologies on our campuses. 

As a regent, in what ways are you working to meet the unique needs of the constituents in your district?

Crear: I feel like I'm a voice for my constituents. I tackle issues that are not always popular when it comes to dealing with diversity and different cultures. I believe I’ve helped people better recognize the need for diversity throughout our entire higher education system.
