Carla Henson was appointed in February of 2003 to serve as the director
of human resources for the NSHE. In this role, Ms. Henson reports directly
to the Chancellor and is responsible for all human resource-related issues
as they pertain to System Administration and its employees, including
employee relations, recruitment, benefits and compensation, Affirmative
Action, and personnel record keeping. Ms. Henson assists the Board of
Regents in developing policies as they relate to System-wide human resource
matters, such as salary and benefits, compensation, and diversity goals.
Ms. Henson also serves on numerous System-wide and national committees
that address retirement and human resource management issues. She is the
chair of the NSHE Retirement Plan Advisory Committee, chair of the Human
Resources Advisory Council, a member of the National TIAA CREF Advisory
Council, and a past board member with the Public Employees’ Benefits
Program. Ms. Henson is also a member of the College and University Professional
Association for Human Resources, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and Nevada
CUPA. In addition, Ms. Henson has completed many professional development
seminars and courses. She is a graduate of the WACUBO four-year Management
Institute, and has taken such courses as “Personnel Management for
the Human Resource Specialist,” “Preventing and Defending
Sexual Harassment in Nevada,” and “Employee Attitude Problems,
Firing, and the Law.”
Before joining the NSHE, Ms. Henson served as director of human resources
at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas from July 2000 to February 2003.
She has also held various other positions at UNLV throughout her career,
including associate director of human resources from November 1991 to
June 2000; interim director of human resources from November 1993 to June
1994, benefits manager from 1990 to 1991, and assistant controller from
1988 to 1990.
A graduate of UNLV, Ms. Holds a bachelor of arts and letters in sociology,
and has completed 30 post-graduate courses in business.
