Bart Patterson was appointed as the vice chancellor of administrative and legal affairs on September 17, 2009, having previously served as NSHE’s chief counsel since August 2006. Patterson has also served the System as deputy chief counsel, assistant general counsel, and as general counsel for the College of Southern Nevada and Nevada State College.

Prior to joining the NSHE in March 2001, Patterson was an attorney in private practice for over 13 years, including Daughton, Hawkins, Brockelman, Guinan and Patterson in Phoenix; the national law firm Bryan Cave, and locally with John H. Cotton & Associates. His broad experience includes general commercial litigation in state and federal courts, including education law, complex business torts, employment law, intellectual property, contract disputes, medical and legal malpractice, health care regulation, administrative law, and insurance coverage.

Patterson earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Utah State University in 1984, and a juris doctor (with honors) from Duke University School of Law in 1987. He is a member of the State Bars of Nevada, Arizona, and Idaho, and is involved in various civic organizations and activities.
