Position Announcement
For
Director of Insurance and Loss Management
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) invites applications and
nominations for the position of Director of Insurance and Loss Management.
This is a renewable, full-time, non-tenured, administrative position and
reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Internal Audit and Risk
Management. The position will be located in Reno, Nevada. The NSHE is
comprised of eight institutions:
Two universities, a state college, four community colleges, and a research
institute. The public system of higher education in Nevada continues to
experience growth, with significant challenges and opportunities in serving
100,000 students and 12,000 employees.
While the primary responsibility for risk management functions are maintained
at the institutional level, the System, through the Vice Chancellor of Finance
and Administration and Director of Insurance and Loss Management, is
responsible for ensuring adherence by the institutions to national standards
for risk management programs. The Director of Insurance and Loss Management is
responsible for the coordination of the risk and insurance programs of the
NSHE. The responsibilities of the position are performed with considerable
independence and involve ongoing contact with senior and middle management on
the campuses, general counsel, and professional, technical and service
organizations in the risk management and insurance field.
SALARY:
Minimum starting salary $81,232
Please note that all professional employees are subject to twelve mandatory
unpaid leave days in FY 2011.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate must have an earned bachelors degree in
Business, Risk Management or a related field from an accredited institution. A
minimum of seven years progressive experience directly applicable to the
position is required. Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or Chartered Property
and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
: Successful candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills and
abilities. It is recommended that applicants for this position address each of
the following items in the letter of application:
Knowledge:
Extensive knowledge of insurance coverages, industry practices and loss
management techniques such as loss avoidance, contractual risk transfer and
loss reduction techniques.
Skills:
Word processing, spreadsheet and database skills. Working knowledge of
actuarial techniques, statistics and mathematics. Excellent written and oral
communication skills required.
Abilities:
Ability to analyze complex contractual and insurance documents. Must have the
ability to analyze numerical, actuarial and statistical exhibits and draw
appropriate conclusions. Must also have the ability to exercise leadership
within a complex and diverse college and university system.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the
following areas of responsibility within Insurance and Loss Management:

Insurance and Loss Management Perform insurance negotiations, conduct
RFPs for coverage, coordinate insurance programs.

Claims Management Process and investigate claims, manage contracts with
third party administrators, coordinate claims and settlements, analyze
exposures to loss, respond to inquiries regarding policies and coverage to
institution staff.

Coordinate and communicate with institution staff in providing comprehensive
risk management services including risk analysis, claims management
administration, loss control and safety programs.

Development and implementation of a Risk Management Information System
