The Board of Regents met pursuant to a call of the President
at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Present: H. G. Blasdel, C. N. Noteware and A. N. Fisher.
A communication from the State Register under date June 8, 1868
was read, ordered on file (see file "U2"), and selection ordered
under 500,000 Acre Grant of tracts described as follows, viz:
N.W. 1/4 Section 8, J12 N. R.20E., 160 acres, C. Bult
S.W. 1/4 of S.E. 1/4 Section 19, J15 N. R.20 E., 40 acres,
J. P. Kinris
S. 1/2 Section 20, J13 N. R.20 E., 320 acres, E. R. Ferris
N.W. 1/4 Section 18, J13 N. R.20 E., 160 acres, G. W. Ferris
S.E. 1/4 of S.W. 1/4 Section 34, J13 N. R.20 E., 40 acres,
J. P. Pettegraw
being in total, 720 acres.
A communication from Messrs. Britton & Gray under date June 6,
was read, ordered on file (see file "B & G-4") and the Secretary
was instructed to answer inquiries of said letter.
A communication from the Register under date June 22 was read,
ordered on file (see file "V-2"), and selection ordered under
500,000 Acre Grant of lands described as follows, viz:
On application J. W. Haniff, N.E. 1/4 of Section 21, J15 N.
R.19 E., 160 acres; on application of D. E. Jones of S.W.
1/4 of S.W. 1/4 of Section 11, J15 N. R.20 E., 50 acres; of
S. C. Chase, N. 1/2 of S.W. 1/4 of S.E. 1/4 of S.W. 1/4 of
Section 8, J13 N. R.19 E., 160 acres, being in total for
360 acres.
A communication from the Register under date June 25 was read,
ordered on file (see file "W-2"), and selection of lands named
as having been applied for in List No. 4 of Indemnity Selections
and rejected on account of location, was ordered under 500,000
Acre Grant for 640 acres. Lands described in List No. 2, Public
Building Grant, rejected as above, were ordered selected under
500,000 Acre Grant for 320 acres. Selection of lands described
in rejected List No. 5, Public Building Grant, was ordered de-
layed for further information. The N.E. 1/4 of the N.E. 1/4 of
Section 10, J17 N. R.20 E., applied for by John Munson, was
ordered selected under the Public Building Grant for 80 acres.
The S.E. 1/4 of the N.W. 1/4 of Section 34, J16 N. R.21 E., was
ordered selected on application of W. J. O'Neale under 500,000
Acre Grant for 80 acres. The S. 1/2 of N.W. 1/4, and the S.W.
1/4, and the W. 1/2 of the S.E. 1/4 of Section 8, J17 N. R.19,
E., 320 acres, was ordered selected on application of W. C.
Bevins under 500,000 Acre Grant for 640 acres.
A communication from the Register under date June 26 was read,
ordered on file (see file "X-2"), and selection of N.W. 1/4 of
Section 8, J13 N. R.19 E., and the S.E. 1/4 of Section 32, J14
N. R.19 E., was ordered on application of Charles Aitken under
500,000 Acre Grant for 320 acres.
A communication from the Register under date June 26 was read,
ordered on file (see file "Y-2"), and selection of S.E. 1/4 of
Section 14, J16 N. R.21 E., 160 acres, applied for by W. B.
Bonnie was ordered under the 500,000 Acre Grant for 320 acres.
A communication of the Register under date June 27 was read,
ordered on file (see file "Z-2"), and selection ordered under
500,000 Acre Grant of the E. 1/2 of Section 18, J17 N. R.19 E.,
320 acres applied for by A. M. Edgington, selected for 640 acres.
Also of N.W. 1/4 and N. 1/2 of the S.W. 1/4 of Section 20, J17
N. R.19 E., 240 acres, applied for by J. P. Martin, selected for
480 acres, being in total 1120 acres.
On motion of C. N. Noteware, it was,
RESOLVED, that the minimum price of the 16th and 36th
section lands is hereby fixed as follows, viz:
Timber lands (lands valuable for timber) two and
50/100 dollars per acre.
Agricultural lands one and 25/100 dollars per acre,
except the same be within twenty miles of the line
of the C. P. R. R., in which case the price shall
be two and 50/100 dollars per acre.
and it was further,
RESOLVED, that all resolutions heretofore passed by the
Board conflicting with the above are hereby rescinded.
On motion of A. N. Fisher, it was,
RESOLVED, that C. N. Noteware be authorized on behalf of
the Board to visit surveyed positions of the State with
a view of designating tracts of land which may properly
be selected by this Board.
A. N. Fisher reported with reference to his mission as per
resolution of February 14, that at the time of his business
in the eastern states, the question of impeachment so engross-
ed legislative attention, as to render futile any effort at
Washington in the direction indicated in said resolution. But
in an interview with the Hon. W. M. Stewart, U. S. Senator from
this State, the matter named in said instructions was recited
and assurances received that no effort should be spared to secure
to the State the privilege of selection under conditions named.
